Concept:

Widespread research shows that individuals on the Autism Spectrum and those with anxiety can struggle with communication and sensory overload. To resolve this issue, it was crucial to develop a system where patrons could select their order based on visual appeal to assist decision making, with as little to no communication required.

Taking inspiration from Japanese Sushi Train restaurants, the concept for Bloom Bar and Social was created. Allowing the conveyor belt to circulate drinks throughout the entirety of the space reduces the need for table service and communication with restaurant staff. The circulating drinks are kept safe from tampering with glass dome covers. Additionally, patrons are able to track and pay for their drinks through the use of iPads stationed at each table with technology confirming which items are removed off the conveyor belt at each table/station.

The final design outcome featured curved benches with booth seating, tracking a conveyor belt in an organic floral shape across the space. The mix of booth and bench seating enables both larger groups or those seeking a more intimate experience to enjoy the space. A central bar connects both ends of the belt, whilst simultaneously allowing staff to remove and place new orders. Arched doorways lead patrons to a unisex bathroom area.

The interior features environmentally friendly sourced and sustainable materials, including concrete, reclaimed timber and cork. Colourful terrazzo-topped recycled plastic tables were complemented with green cotton chair finishes. The final design outcome provides an enriching social hub for patrons inclusive of individuals struggling with social difficulties to enjoy.
